PUMA: Unofficial ad campaign.
And I must stress how unofficial it is. I don’t want to face any form of legal action. I love you, Puma!
Hi! Bet you thought I’d forgotten how to write stuff down, eh? Not quite, I’ve just been very, very busy. Having said that, the coffee shop I used to work for got sold by its owner - entirely because he couldn’t be fucking bothered to look after it anymore - so we all lost our jobs. £120 redundancy pay, is shit.
Don’t worry, I’m close to getting another job which is exclusively Barista. I’ll let you know.
Anyway, this. This is the first of many shoots to come in my latest project: An unofficial ad campaign for the legendary sportswear brand ‘Puma’. The concept is quite simple, let me explain…
People do, and probably always will, buy ‘Puma’ without so much a second thought. They’re a brand which need never advertise again, if only ever to re-enstate their company morals, their founding ethos. ‘Puma’ has become has become as much a part of our material world, as flora, foliage, wood and water, for example, are fundamental to our natural world.
This project associates the ‘Puma’ brand with nature, in a way which is sympathetic to both it, and the Earth.
Here are two early examples on digital, taken in the studio with a single tungsten light, with the intention of simulating sunlight.

Simulated Sunlight.

It’s early days, but that’s the basic idea. The item will change, as will the natural element - i.e. Wood, Flowers, Water, etc. - What do you think?

I think the concept is very good, and the test shots are beautiful. Mind quoting a bit of the ethos for us? I’m not very familiar. Puma is a brand here but actually could use a bit more advertising– Nike and Adidas are king. (NB, by the way, is also very sad here.)
Excited about the water shot!
The “sunlight” adds to a jungl-y feel that brings out a little ruddiness in the product (some soil here and there might help). I am not convinced that “Flowers”, pretty as they are, will be something they will be enthusiastic about. Also, I know these are test shots but be careful about obscuring important details in the logo, like the ears (I’m sure you realized that, hehe). The twig in photo two needs to be pulled back a bit so it doesn’t cut the puma in half, too. So basically just annoying details
Nagging details! The bane of the photographer, Mark.
The water shot is gonna be a nightmare. I want to do water against a plain white background, and drop something Puma into it. :-s
Coming from the Puma website:
‘PUMA is not a business that manufactures and sells soap powder or ballpoint pens or instant coffee. It is a business rooted in the passionate world of sporting endeavour. The history of the brand resonates with the echoes of great athletes and legendary performances, celebrated in stadiums across the globe. PUMA makes products designed to facilitate the individual achievements that evoke the most passionate responses.’
So you see? Their goals are simple: To be the best at a big thing, for the individual. Spanning golf to sailing, they see themselves as a tactical lifeforce for the sportsman/woman.
Nice to see you back, love. Sorry about the job
That really sucks. But I hope it leads you to better things. I have to say that your artificial sunlight looks very authentic. Nicely done!

Cheers me dears!
It does suck, but what can you do?
The sunlight, I have to admit, was not my idea. It came from the Uni’s photographic technician. I just claimed it as my own.
Mark – I just picked up on your New Balance comment. Strange that they’d be ’sad’. They have quite a successful subsidary company, I just can’t for the life of me remember who it is…
I have a pair of NB though. They’re awesome.
I’m sad to see the decline in popularity of Reebok and Fila classics too. Although, I did recently get a jacket from the Fila Gold range, which is exceptional!
I’d wondered what had happened to the cafe. One day there, the next empty. We will miss the dolly mixtures that came on the cakes.
Good photos, love the little Japanese cat.
duvet girl – Sucks, doesn’t it? They only gave us 2 weeks notice as well.
